O+O House @Pirom Vineyard
Second Residence in Bangkok for a Family Alternating Between Urban Life and Khao Yai Nature
This residence, designed as a secondary home for a Bangkok-based family, embodies a seamless dialogue between urban escape and natural immersion. Situated on a 350-square-meter plot at the corner of a sloping development—reminiscent of Khao Yai’s terrain—the home is conceived as a modern reinterpretation of traditional Thai stilt houses and early wildlife observation towers.
The architectural massing is an almost-square plan, intentionally placed in a direct yet sensitive manner onto the sloped terrain. The natural topography generates undercroft spaces beneath the building, forming a contemporary undercroft (ใต้ถุน) that elevates the architecture lightly above the ground. This approach minimizes site impact and preserves natural drainage while evoking vernacular building strategies.
Inspired by the idea of placing a floating plane in equilibrium with the earth, the structure is supported at three key points: a central core that consolidates services and vertical loads, and two anchoring points at opposing corners of the building. The central core functions as both the mechanical and structural hub of the home and acts as a light and ventilation shaft—bringing natural illumination and cross-breezes into the living spaces.
Though it appears as a single-storey structure from the exterior, the house subtly reveals a semi-subterranean lower level, housing a wine cellar and a shaded multipurpose space. This flexible area supports outdoor leisure activities such as exercising, entertaining, and relaxing by the pool—designed to be usable throughout the day in varying light conditions.
The home is constructed with a 100% steel structural system, selected for its lightness, precision, and adaptability to the sloped site. The roofscape incorporates tropical architectural elements but reinterpreted for greater porosity—allowing full engagement with the surrounding forest canopy, sky, clouds, and seasonal rainfall. Custom-designed rain chains and gutters form curtains of water during storms, creating a multi-sensory connection between occupants and their environment.
The spatial organization follows a radial circulation pattern, gradually transitioning from shared public areas to more private zones. Every room maintains a consistent connection to natural light, ventilation, and Landscape, ensuring equal quality of experience throughout the residence.
Special consideration has been given to the family dog, with integrated anti-slip surface treatments and gentle slope transitions for ease of movement—demonstrating a design ethos that encompasses all members of the family.
By day, the house quietly blends into its green surroundings. By night, it transforms into a glowing lantern—an architectural beacon animated by the life within. The design encourages continual engagement, not only with its residents but also with the changing qualities of light, weather, and season.
